Settling with Power (Vortex Ring State) – Helicopter Flight Maneuvers
This is a reference video of unedited footage from inside the cockpit during what the FAA calls settling-with-power (SWP), but what is actually vortex-ring-state (VRS) in an R22 helicopter.
The whole ‘SWP is not VRS’ conversation is for another video. The main target audience of these videos are helicopter students in the FAA system, and the FAA uses ‘Settling With Power’ as the name for this emergency procedure maneuver/recovery in the Pilot Test Standards & other material (https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/test_standards/media/FAA-S-8081-15a.pdf) and so SWP is the maneuver the FAA examiner will be asking students to demonstrate. So that is why we use both ‘SWP’ and the more correct ‘VRS’ in the title/description – to help those looking for VRS by the FAA name.
This video was produced for a presentation to aviation students at COCC. I thought the video may be useful to others, but In time these videos will be replaced by a more comprehensive instructional videos with key points, common errors and the PTS requirements.
